CAD Data FAQ

When do we send the CAD data to T-SIM service department?

When to send the data depends on what service(s) the T-SIM service department is providing for you.

RFQ Data:

T-SIM can quote new tooling simulation using:  just a detailed 2D or 3D Process File (flowchart), or with a design that is ready for simulation, or anything in-between.  You must let us know the status of the data provided (example:  for quote use only, use for running R1 simulation, etc.).
For more information about T-SIM RFQ process, visit our RFQ information page

New tooling simulation data (R1):

Send R1 simulation CAD data AFTER the build shop and stamper have BOTH reviewed the design (50% or 75% design review), AND their requested changes have been completed in the design. We prefer to have all components in the design and placed in the intended locations before the first simulation.

Process Planning Package:

If T-SIM is involved earlier in the process, such as:  to confirm station-to-station process, press assignment, finger positions, and to create a helpful supplier package to get the design started with the right goals in mind... please send us the 3D process file showing all station parts.

What is the required file format for CAD data?

STEP Format. T-SIM service department required STEP data exported in STP/STEP 214. If you would like to test your export STP/STEP 214 data, send a file to TestStep@transfersim.com or contact our office at 616-863-8630.
IMPORTANT: For each stage of simulation, send all data for all operations in the design. Regardless of if any changes were made to those operations or not.

Do I need to save one Step file or multiple Step files?

Generally, we prefer One Step file following the appropriate assembly structure (below). If your file size will be larger than approx. 1.5GB, then you can send multiple step files organized in the following manner:
Lower assembly at “die-closed-position”
Upper assembly at “die-closed-position”
Parts at “die-closed-position”
Grippers, Bars, Press at “pick-up position”

What is T-SIM's preferred Assembly Structure?

Lower Assembly – All lower components in “die-closed-position”
If using aerial cams, the aerial cam drivers should be included in the lower assembly
Upper Assembly – All upper components in “die-closed-position”
If using die mount cams, the cam drivers should be included in the upper assembly
Part Assembly – An accurate representation of the part in each station in “die-closed-position”
Press Assembly – Bolster, ram, transfer bars, etc.
  1. Front Bar Assembly – Front transfer bar and grippers/fingers in “pick-up-position”
  2. Back Bar Assembly – Back transfer bar and grippers/fingers in “pick-up-position”
Additional Gripper/Finger Information (if available)
It is important that we have fingers positioned properly in the tooling to ensure accuracy of the simulation.
Any connecting components such as couplers, extensions, etc., between the bars and fingers should be shown as well.
Please make sure the models supplied in the data are the actual models used in the stamping facility.

How do I export to STEP 214?

Step Export Settings – CATIA

·         Do not rename the step files after they are created. This creates a discrepancy between the step file name and the translated part or product name when opened in CATIA.

·         If your software provides an option for naming always select the long or full naming option.

·         If you have software other than CATIA or NX, use these as reference and try to match the options as closely as possible.
